Solar questions, answered honestly

How is my solar savings estimate calculated?

We size a system to cover your usage, derived from your monthly bill and your utility's actual rates, then apply your state's average daily sunshine hours, realistic system losses, and current local installed prices. You see system size, panel count, production, monthly savings, payback period, and a 0–100 candidacy score.

What does a home solar system cost in 2026?

Installed prices currently run about $2.50–$3.20 per watt before incentives, so a typical 8 kW system lands between roughly $20,000 and $25,600. High-cost coastal markets run more; sunnier low-cost states run less.

What happened to the 30% federal tax credit?

The Section 25D residential credit for homeowner-purchased systems expired at the end of 2025. Leased and PPA systems can still benefit from separate commercial credits, which is one reason $0-down lease offers remain common. Many states and utilities also offer their own rebates. Your installer will walk through what applies locally.

Is my home a good fit for solar?

The big factors: your electric rates (higher rates = faster payback), daily sunshine in your state, roof shading, roof age and orientation, and whether your utility credits exported power. Our candidacy score combines all of these so you can see fit at a glance before talking to anyone.

Should I wait until I replace my roof?

If your roof needs replacement within ~5 years, do it first or bundle the projects. Removing and re-installing panels later costs thousands. Our funnel asks about roof condition so installers can quote a roof-plus-solar bundle when it makes sense.

Do I need a battery?

Not for savings in most states, but batteries add outage protection and help in states without full net metering by storing your excess solar for evening use. They typically add $9,000–$15,000 installed.

Lease or buy?

Buying (cash or loan) maximizes long-term savings and adds home value. Leases and PPAs offer $0-down and maintenance included, in exchange for lower lifetime savings. We ask your preference and match you with installers who offer it.
